Professional paramedic. Volume 2, Medical emergencies, maternal health & pediatrics / Richard Beebe, Jeffrey Myers.

Beebe, Richard W. O. (Author). Myers, Jeffrey. (Added Author).

Summary:

In this second volume in a three-part series aimed at current and future paramedics, Beebe (emergency medicine, State U. of New York at Cobleskill) and Myers (emergency medicine, State U. of New York-Buffalo) apply the knowledge and skills from the first volume to specific medical emergencies, maternal health, and pediatrics. Sections cover medical emergencies such as heart failure, cardiac resuscitation, alcoholism, psychiatric and behavioral disorders, abdominal pain, bleeding disorders, infectious diseases, anaphylaxis, and disorders of oxygenation, ventilation, brain function, cerebral circulation, and glucose metabolism; maternal health and the newborn, including childbirth and resuscitation; pediatrics, including child abuse and neglect; and special patients, such as the elderly, those with disabilities, chronically ill patients, and those involved in intimate partner violence. Each chapter outlines principles, skills, and terminology; a typical case; critical response steps; and reviews of key concepts. Trauma and special response considerations are covered in the third volume. The series includes all content areas of the National Emergency Medicine Services Education Standards and contains material on most of the critical and emergency disorders listed in the EMS core content, as well as lower acuity conditions, to help students prepare for certification exams.
